The Leap of Faith: My Study Journey in Malaysia

I still remember the feeling of stepping into a very humid country I barely had knowledge of for the first time. I was alone, uncertain but I was excited to discover Malaysia on my own terms with no one’s influence on me. As a young lady from Zimbabwe, choosing to pursue my studies abroad was both exciting and intimidating. I didn’t travel with my parents and truthfully, I didn’t know much about Malaysia beyond what I had read online. But sometimes, the most transformative journeys begin with that exact mix of courage and uncertainty.

Now, as a second-year Mechanical Engineering student at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, I can confidently say that coming to Malaysia has been one of the most defining decisions of my life.

Academically, the journey has challenged me in ways I never imagined. Mechanical engineering is not an easy field, but it has pushed me to grow and not just intellectually, but in resilience and discipline. Beyond the classroom, I’ve been fortunate to take on leadership roles that have shaped me into a more confident and purpose-driven individual. I currently serve as the President of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Society, where I work alongside an incredible team to empower and support women pursuing STEM fields. I am also the Vice President of Christian Fellowship, a role that has strengthened my faith and given me a sense of community and belonging away from home.

But what truly makes my experience in Malaysia special goes far beyond academics and leadership. It’s the people.

Malaysia is such a beautiful melting pot of cultures and coming to live in Malaysia has helped open my mind to the beauty of diversity. I have met people from all over the world and they each come with their own story and way of living. From sharing and making food with friends from other countries to experiencing cultural festivals I had never seen before, every single moment spent here has provided me with new knowledge and experience. I came here knowing very little about global cultures, but now I feel like bits and pieces of the world follow me wherever I go.

A new favourite hobby I acquired since I moved here would be traveling and exploring. There will always be some exciting activity happening in Malaysia, right from exploring its amazing cities, visiting famous tourist spots, attending concerts and events, hanging out with my friends at cafés, attending classes and workshops or participating in cultural events and festivals, there’s always something happening. Malaysia offers something for everyone, no matter your interests or background. It’s a country that refuses to let you be bored, constantly inviting you to step out and see something new.

Professionally, Malaysia offers a wide range of opportunities, especially in engineering. It’s a goldmine. Being surrounded by multinational companies, tech giants and a growing industrial sector has given me insight into the possibilities that lie ahead. It’s inspiring to know that I am studying in a place where innovation and industry are so interconnected and it motivates me to keep working toward my goals.

Looking back, I realize that coming to Malaysia alone was more than just a physical journey, it was a leap of faith into independence. It taught me how to stand on my own, how to build connections from scratch and how to embrace the unknown with confidence.

My story is still being written and there is so much more to explore, achieve and experience. But if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this; sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is to take that first step into a place you know nothing about and trust that it will shape you into everything you’re meant to become.
