Malaysia has many ways to get around. Cars and motorcycles are popular, but trains and buses are becoming more common in cities. This is good for the environment and helps reduce traffic.
Malaysia's public transportation system is a gem for international students, offering highly reliable and well-maintained services at incredibly affordable prices. With fares ranging from just 0.20 to 1.50 USD per ride, getting around is not only efficient but also easy on the pocket. This makes exploring vibrant cities and commuting to educational institutions both convenient and cost-effective.
As a student, stretching that dollar means utilising public transport like metro trains and buses over pricier taxis. Public buses can take you to almost anywhere in Malaysia in comfort.
In addition, most Malaysian universities also charter their own buses for international students to visit hotspots throughout the city – we highly recommend that you hop on. Do take advantage of the Go KL City Bus, a bus service plying Kuala Lumpur’s downtown hotspots, completely free of charge.
Train services are one of the most popular forms of public transportation in Malaysia. There are a lot of options for train services, like KTM Komuter, Electric Train Services (ETS), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rapid Transit (LRT), and Monorail. Services such as the MRT,LRT, and Monorail are only available in Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley, but Malaysia is expanding its rail service to other states as well.
FYI, KL Sentral is the main transit hub for trains, serving as the one-stop centre for the majority of the train services in Malaysia. It is also a preferred bus stop for buses stopping in Kuala Lumpur.
To make your commute easier, it's highly recommended for students to get a Touch 'n Go card. This versatile card is accepted on various modes of public transport, including buses, trains, and even tolls and parking, offering a hassle-free way to pay without the need for cash. Alternatively, train services also offer tokens and tickets from vending machines or counters for those without a card.
Although you can get a ticket from vending machines, it is advisable to get a rechargeable Touch 'n Go primarily for convenience! You can use it almost anywhere for transport or payment!

Private rides like taxis and e-hailing services (like Grab and EZcab) are convenient but can be more expensive. They're great for groups or carpooling to save money.
Grab and AirAsia Ride: Popular e-hailing apps with reliable services and transparent pricing.
Local Taxi Dispatchers: Traditional taxis that can be found at taxi stands.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA): The main international airport, with two terminals.
Subang Skypark: A smaller airport closer to the city, often used for domestic and regional flights.
How to get there:
KLIA Express and KLIA Transit are frequent and efficient services that connect Kuala Lumpur with KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. KLIA Express travels non-stop between KL Sentral and KLIA, and it only takes 28 minutes, while KLIA Transit takes around 36 minutes and stops at 3 additional stations in between.
Coaches operating between KL Sentral and KLIA are very frequent. Free shuttle service is also provided between KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Taxi service to KLIA is available but often costs more than taking the trains or bus since KLIA is isolated and around 55 KM from the city. Certain taxis will have a fixed price for KLIA, which is around 15.00 USD, while others might use metre taxis, which can cost 0.20 USD per KM.
Pro tip: To save money, students can use taxi service only when they have large or multiple pieces of luggage to bring.
Adapting to a new culture can be challenging, but with these tips, you will find it easier to integrate and enjoy your time in Malaysia. Respect the local customs, practice the language, and you will gain a richer experience. Welcome to your new adventure!
