My Study Journey in Malaysia: From Internship to PhD

Salam, I am Febri Hariyanto. I come from the peaceful and beautiful area of Lampung in Indonesia. My amazing adventure in Malaysia actually began long before I decided to pursue higher education here. Back in 2024, I traveled from Indonesia to Malaysia for a long-term internship program at InterContinental Hotels Group. It was a fantastic stepping stone that made me fall in love with the country.

During holidays, I enjoy travelling and exploring different education fairs around Malaysia. In 2025, I attended the major AEF event organized by EMGS. That decision changed my path entirely. There, I met an amazing representative from Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM). We had a great conversation, and it inspired me to take my studies further. Today, I am proudly pursuing my PhD at UPTM, grateful for that invaluable encounter.

University life is not just about staying in the library or focusing solely on academic research. I actively participate in extracurricular events hosted by the campus. These activities allow me to socialize, share experiences, and connect with people from completely different backgrounds.

Another golden opportunity came when I joined the “Malaysian Cultural Discovery” event in Terengganu, hosted by EMGS specifically for international students. I was so happy to meet students from various countries and build good cross-border relationships. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.

The most memorable part of that trip was learning a highly unique cultural tradition. My foster parents there had a beautiful habit: they regularly invited close neighbors over to their house for simple meals and drinks. They do this on a rotating basis every week, moving from one house to another. The goal? As they told me, it is "to strengthen relationships and build a sense of comfort among neighbors." It was a profound lesson in community building that I will always remember.

These activities have had a truly positive impact on me. Through them, I’ve been able to help and inspire many students who dream of studying abroad, particularly in Malaysia. I sincerely hope for more opportunities to join other major events and proudly represent my campus and hometown.

This is just a small chapter of my journey, and I look forward to sharing more fun stories with you next time.

Until then, stay healthy and see you around!
