Discovering Malaysia with an Open Heart

My name is Shamim. I’m a Tanzanian student pursuing a degree in International Business Management at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. Though it wasn’t my first time living abroad, it was my first time in Malaysia, and I came with no expectations. I wanted to experience the country for what it truly is, and that decision gave me one of the best experiences of my life.

From the moment I landed, everything felt smooth and welcoming. The visa and arrival process, managed by EMGS, was so professional that I instantly felt at ease. That level of support continued throughout my stay—Malaysia has been nothing but kind, warm, and modern beyond what I imagined.

What stood out most were the people. As an international student, I expected to struggle to fit in, but locals were friendly, curious, and always happy to offer tips like places to visit, foods to try...etc. It’s those small moments that have filled my heart with so much joy.

I thought I’d feel homesick during Ramadan, but it turned out to be the most heartwarming time. I broke almost all my fasts at the mosque with new friends and felt a deep sense of connection. Furthermore, I never felt alone, always surrounded by good company and kindness.
One of my favorite places here is Putrajaya. The atmosphere is calm, the parks are beautiful, and the scenic views make it my go-to escape. And don’t get me started on the food! I’m obsessed with beef satay, I could eat 20 pieces in one go. I also love kuih akok, apam balik, beef rendang, and all the flavourful dishes I’ve tried at the Ramadan bazaars, that I’ve gained weight from eating so much…time to hit the gym!

I love sharing my journey on Instagram—from daily uni life to exploring different parts of Malaysia. Looking back, I’m grateful I came with an open heart. Malaysia has become a beautiful chapter in my life, shaping not just my education, but also my mental wellbeing.

To any future international student thinking of coming to Malaysia…do it! Come with an open heart, and you’ll be amazed by how quickly this place starts to feel like home. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try new foods (even the spicy ones!), and talk to people. Malaysians are welcoming and friendly, they’ll make you feel at home. My advice? Be present. Explore beyond your campus, learn a few local words (my favourite one is jom jalan jalan), and take time to appreciate the little moments. Studying abroad isn’t just about academics; it’s about growing as a person, and Malaysia is a beautiful place to do just that.

Terima kasih Malaysia. Saya sayang Malaysia.
