I'm Abdullah Al Nahid from Bangladesh, and I am an undergraduate student studying software engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (UTMKL). As the secretary of the International Students Society (ISS) UTMKL, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with students from all over the world. My first time living abroad has been challenging and rewarding. Initially, I faced homesickness, but over time, I’ve come to embrace Malaysia as my second home. In this article, I’d like to share how I adapted to studying and living in Malaysia and why this journey has been truly transformative.
Arriving in Malaysia was a mix of excitement and nervousness. The vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, and warm people immediately caught my attention. However, being away from my family for the first time was not easy. Video calls and regular communication with my loved ones back in Bangladesh initially helped me cope, but I soon realized I needed to build a support system here to truly thrive.
One of the turning points in my journey was joining ISS UTMKL. Engaging with international and local students through events and activities gave me a sense of belonging. I was amazed by the diversity of cultures represented at UTMKL and how welcoming everyone was. Through ISS, I’ve made lifelong friends and learned about traditions around the world. These connections not only eased my homesickness but also broadened my horizons.
Exploring Malaysia has been another highlight of my experience. My friends and I have visited iconic places like the Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves, and Genting Highlands. Each trip was filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories. Malaysia’s natural beauty, from its pristine beaches to its lush rainforests, never fails to amaze me. I’ve also grown fond of Malaysian cuisine, especially dishes like nasi lemak and nasi goreng ayam, which have become my comfort food.
Academically, UTM has provided me with a supportive and enriching environment. The lecturers are approachable and encouraging, and the university’s emphasis on practical learning has helped me gain valuable skills. Beyond academics, participating in cultural events and
leadership activities have enhanced my personal growth.

In conclusion, my time in Malaysia has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. The blend of academic excellence, cultural richness, and warm hospitality has made this experience unforgettable. I look forward to sharing my stories with my family and friends back in Bangladesh and hope to inspire others to embark on their own Malaysian adventure. Malaysia will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to create even more memories in this incredible country.
