Beyond the Classroom: My Transformative Study Journey in Malaysia

I am SATHYA, a Cambodian student studying in the School of Business and Economics, University Putra Malaysia, in the 7th semester. Coming all the way to Malaysia alone was such a challenge but a rewarding experience within this academic journey. I believe that my story will play a part in empowering your global education journey.

Frankly speaking, during the settlement process was the time I’ve been stressing out the most, yet the first step is always the hardest. My social battery was recharged once I met with both local and international students during the orientation week. Imagine talking to people from more than 10 countries a day; it was truly incredible. Eventually, I find it easy to adapt to Malay culture and environment. Within this early process, I have pushed myself to talk to people, to explore the new context as much as I can to absorb all the necessary information.

During class; since I am an international student, it was easy to attract the lecturer’s attention. As I study economics, lecturers always ask me to share my point of view by benchmarking the theories and some certain topics to my country, Cambodia. I consider this as a source of motivation to stay focused on class. It is also a chance for me to share about my country's context to the whole class as well.

One of the most memorable experiences was when I participated in a community programme conducted in Langkawi by the KTAG College of UPM. I was assigned to stay with a foster family in the village for 3 days. Even with the language barrier, I was welcomed with open arms and was taken care of like I was at home. I could embrace the local culture, food, and learn about what they do for a living. My journey is not just about coming to study at school but to learn through hands-on experiences, which was truly an enriching experience.

It was such a great start to my personal journey, that I dreamed of working internationally after graduating. Being immersed in new learning experiences, cultural competencies, and practical experiences was a rewarding experience that has significantly shaped my personal and professional growth. Efforts have been put in, connections were expanded, and my eyes are wide open. To those who are eager to pursue their study journey in Malaysia, know that it is more than just an academic experience; you will find various potential opportunities to take part in and explore your growth in different patterns.
