No one told me that the right decision could come with so many doubts. For me, that decision was studying abroad.
My name is Muhammad Nailul Author Al Aulisy. You can call me Nailul. Before I decided to study in Malaysia, I spent four years as a teacher at a non-formal school. There, I met many students from diverse backgrounds. Throughout those years, I slowly immersed myself in their world, a world that often seemed full of joy and laughter, but sometimes also had a painful side. Some of them grew up in loving families, while many others carried childhood wounds from parents who were not present.

Coming from my personal journey and teaching experience, I became more certain that Psychology was the right field for me. Beyond that, my dream also included studying abroad and receiving a scholarship. I knew the process would be very long. At that time, I almost gave up because I experienced many rejections, and my condition back then made it nearly impossible to study abroad without scholarship support. Until one piece of good news came: I was accepted into UCSI University with a 100% tuition fee waiver scholarship. Since then, I have never stopped being grateful, just as I could see the hope in my parents’ eyes, hoping that I would become the first university graduate in our family.

Although my first three months in Malaysia were filled with new experiences, adaptation, and many questions, I never expected that one year would pass so quickly. After spending a year studying in Malaysia, I slowly found the reasons why God placed me here. A place filled with diversity, many opportunities, and, of course, a place where I could grow gradually.

During my first year of university, I wrote my first solo book, Selumbari. It contains reflections, the process of acceptance, and forgiveness from a young person who is still in the process of growing. Beyond that, throughout my studies, I am grateful to have remained involved in several volunteering activities. I became a caregiver at Taman Sinar Harapan, had the opportunity to be part of TEDxKuala Lumpur, and found a new family through the Malaysian Cultural Discovery Programme with EMGS. I would say my journey is still long, still many doors that i have not opened yet. But one thing that I will always remember is the chapter of studying in Malaysia will always hold a special place in my heart.
