An Unexpected Love Story: My Study Journey in Malaysia

Hello lovely people! My name is Lama and I am from Sudan. I am finishing my foundation in business qualification at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. Coming to Malaysia was not my first choice — or one at all in the beginning; and it could not have been better than what I expected.

Before ending up in Malaysia, I was going to the UK, (fortunately) my visa process did not go as planned and destiny brought me here. My journey started out smooth with the timely visa process. EMGS and the Global Student Office were my biggest support system here, from obtaining my study offer to arriving at the airport, as well as throughout my studies. As a girl, moving abroad for the first time can be terrifying, but once I got here, all my worries dissipated.

As an international student, I was expecting to feel alienated, but the diversity in Malaysia quickly put me at ease. My friends and I even joke about looking like the diverse friend-group that they put in university brochures! I left Malaysia twice during semester breaks, and every time I left, I felt that I was away from home, that I counting down the days until I’m back in Malaysia.

From the urban, busy streets of KL to the scenic and calm Putrajaya. Whatever your lifestyle is, you can count on Malaysia to match your vibe. I was also worried about how coming here would affect my faith. I had no idea how many different religions are practiced here and now I realise that no matter what your belief (or lack thereof) is, you will find your community.

Additionally, I was introduced to one of my favourite foods ever, in Malaysia — kuey teow goreng. Seriously, I could eat three servings in a row with no issue, it’s THAT good. If you’re worried about food here, don’t be. Around every corner (especially in KL), you’ll find whatever cuisine you enjoy plus most restaurants are authentic.

If you are an international student considering coming to Malaysia, I have only one thing to tell you. DO IT, DO IT, DO IT! I promise if you come here with an open heart and an open mind, you’ll cherish it forever. Go out, see places, talk to people, live like a local and just maybe, your love for Malaysia will only grow in time, just as mine did.
