My name is Yamato and I'm from Japan. I am taking a bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management & Piloting at Management and Science University in Shah Alam, Selangor. As an international student who is studying in Malaysia, I would say choosing Malaysia to study and live apart from the home country has been the best decision of my life.

Fortunately, I have got many opportunities to connect with local people throughout my daily life here. That helps me to see the world from different points of view. One of the most memorable experiences was when my friends invited me to visit his home during Hari Raya. Since it was the first time for me to experience a Malaysian festive celebration so closely, I was both excited and curious. When I arrived at his house, I was warmly welcomed by his family and relatives. They prepared a variety of traditional dishes and encouraged me to try everything. What impressed me the most was the spirit of togetherness. People from different backgrounds visited each other, shared meals, and celebrated the occasion regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

Through this experience, I learned that Malaysia’s multicultural society is not just something written in textbooks. It is something that people practice in their daily lives. Being able to witness and experience this broadened my perspective and helped me develop a deeper understanding of different cultures.

At the same time, my academic journey at university has been equally rewarding. Studying at Management and Science University has allowed me to learn alongside students from various countries, such as Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Sudan and etc. Working on group projects and presentations with classmates from different cultures has improved not only my academics but also my communication and teamwork skills. One thing that surprised me was how much I developed my confidence in using English. At first, expressing my ideas in class discussions and presentations was challenging. However, by actively participating in classes and collaborating with my classmates, I gradually became more comfortable communicating in an international environment.

Looking back on my first year in Malaysia, I can surely say that it has been a life-changing experience. Through cultural exchanges, academic challenges, and friendships with people from around the world, I have grown both personally and professionally. Malaysia has given me valuable opportunities to broaden my perspective and prepare for my future career in aviation. I am excited to continue my journey and make even more meaningful memories in the years ahead.
