FROM ANXIOUS TO ADVENTUROUS: MY EXPERIENCE STUDYING IN MALAYSIA AS A FIRST-TIME TRAVELER

Hi There, Aspiring Students!

I am David Imisiayo Elizabeth, a full-time Nigerian undergraduate student in International Economics at the University of Malaysia, Sarawak. My educational journey in Malaysia has been exciting, adventurous, and full of wonderful experiences. If you are considering studying in Malaysia, as a full-time or an exchange student, I hope my experiences and this blog can help and inspire you to make that decision and take the leap.

As a shy individual who dreams of studying abroad, boarding my flight to Malaysia was thrilling and nerve-wracking. I was filled with excitement about the idea of studying in a new country but I was also worried about experiencing a whole different culture and meeting with people from different cultural backgrounds. Little did I know that my journey would turn me from a nervous first-time traveler to a confident adventurer who seizes every opportunity that presents itself.

Arriving in Malaysia, I initially questioned my decision to come alone due to the diverse cultures and unfamiliar language, but my view on this changed over time. I discovered that Malaysia is more than simply a location to visit; it’s a place to discover your strengths, make new local and international friends, and create unforgettable memories. You won’t regret taking this voyage, which will transform you into an adventurous and expose you to rich cultural diversity, where you will encounter a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences that shape the country’s cultural unique identity.

Academically, studying in Malaysia also pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone. The educational system promotes teamwork and critical thinking, which was different from my previous experiences. Interacting with my classmates' varied viewpoints improved my educational experience, helped me build lasting friendships, boosted my confidence and enhanced my communication skills.

When it comes to culinary adventure, Malaysian cuisine is second to none. The aroma of sizzling indigenous dishes and tasty fruits, especially from street food vendors, ignites one’s curiosity about the local culture, and the friendly vendors encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try bites of spicy delicious foods and sweet desserts. Also, the cultural landmarks and cultural festivals immerse you in the celebrations and connect with the community. These experiences shifted my perspectives of Malaysia and I realized that every challenge I faced was an opportunity for growth.

Overall, the choice to embark on this journey in Malaysia is entirely yours to make. If you would like to experience cultural exploration, personal growth, and life-changing adventures, let Malaysia be the destination that transforms you. Embrace the opportunity, and let your journey and adventure begin here!
