My name is Masako, and I am a former exchange student from Japan. I had the opportunity to study in Sarawak, a beautiful state on the eastern side of Malaysia. For anyone considering studying abroad, I would love to share why Malaysia could be the perfect choice for you.
First of all, the people here are incredibly friendly and welcoming to foreigners. From the moment you meet a Malaysian, they greet you warmly and often strike up a conversation, instantly making you feel at ease. I clearly remember how taxi drivers would chat with me during my rides, proudly sharing stories about local food, languages, and sightseeing spots.
One thing that stood out to me was how often dishes like Laksa (a spicy noodle soup) and Roti Canai (a flaky flatbread) were recommended. Thanks to their suggestions, I got to explore Malaysia’s local food culture, and those dishes quickly became some of my favourites. If you are ever unsure about what to eat or where to go, just ask around. Malaysians are always happy to share.
Another reason Malaysia is so special is its cultural diversity. The country is home to various ethnic groups such as Malays, Chinese, and Indians, who live together in harmony and mutual respect. This multicultural blend is reflected in everything from food to festivals, making everyday life vibrant and full of variety.
It is hard to pick just one favourite moment from my time in Malaysia. Even the quiet days spent attending classes or relaxing in my dorm felt meaningful. But if I had to choose, I would say visiting the Kuching Waterfront stands out. Each visit was different, with beautiful river views, tasty street food, and live music filling the air. I was lucky to join the annual countdown event with fireworks, food stalls, and cheerful crowds. It was truly unforgettable.
Studying at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was an amazing experience. The university made a real effort to involve international students in the local culture. During our first week, we even learned a traditional dance and performed it on stage. I was nervous at first, but the warm smiles from the audience helped me feel more confident.
There was always something happening at UNIMAS, from cultural events to sports activities, making it easy to meet new people and learn more about Malaysia. The lecturers were kind and approachable, always ready to support us whenever we had questions or needed help.
All in all, my time at UNIMAS was about more than just academics. It was about building connections and creating lasting memories. If you are looking for a study destination full of rich culture, friendly people, and endless opportunities to grow and explore, I wholeheartedly recommend Malaysia.
